Cactus e Dintorni - Cactus Planet - welwitschiaceae

Habitat: foggy deserts of Angola and Namibia.
Description: this creeping plant develops two long, ribbon-like leaves only; they tend to split with age since the tip becomes dry and dies while the leaf blade continues to grow at the base and enlarge. The long taproot searches for moisture deep in the ground. It is not a real succulent.
Soil: 3/4 of lapillus, 1/4 of all-purpose potting soil.
Location: full sun (adult specimens only).
Temperature: seedlings need a minimum temperature around 10-14°C (50-57°F). Mature plants can be overwintered at 5-8°C (41-46°F).
Water: the substrate should never be allowed to dry out completely; water sparingly providing a little moisture also in the winter. It’s better to add some fungicide to the water.
Cultivation tips: use very deep containers (at least 30-40 cm/12-16 in); do not transplant often nor move the pot from one site to another (if you have to, do it gradually). They are particularly susceptible to fungal diseases and drought during their first years of life. Fertilise regularly.
Main genera of Welwitschiaceae: Welwitschia mirabilis (monotypic genus).
