Habitat: the succulent species occur in South Africa, the Canary Islands, South Arabia, India, Madagascar.
Description: the family includes dicotyledonous plants that may store water in the leaves, the leaf stalks or in the stem and also in the roots. The sessile flowers are borne in cymes of various shapes; the specialized calyx is called ‘pappus’ and the fruit is an achene. Plants of economic importance within the family are: thistle, artichoke, sunflower, chicory and lettuce.

Location: grow in partial shade.
Temperature: minimum temperature of 10°C (50°F).
Water: water freely during the growing season, sparingly the rest of the year.
Cultivation tips: easy; propagate from cuttings. Watch out for mealy bugs and aphids.
