Habitat: distributed over a wide area: Andean ranges of Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile growing at heights of up to 3000 m (9800 ft).
Description: these plants are typical of mountain cacti, having a columnar stem covered with dense bristles from which long, different coloured spines arise. The hairs enveloping the stem act as a blanket that protects the plant from the bitter cold and the strong solar radiation. They may have synonyms in Pilocereus, Morawetzia and Borzicactus.
Soil: basic mix.
Location: grow young plants in filtered light and adult ones in full sun.
Temperature: they can tolerate low temperatures around 4°C (39°F) in a dry environment but it’s best to maintain the minimum at around 8° or 10°C (46-50°F) to avoid the formation of scars.
Water: average.
Cultivation tips: it’s a long-lived, tough genus that grows slowly and only flowers at maturity.
Main species of Oreocereus: Oreocereus celsianus, slow-growing, best placed in filtered light in the summer and overwintered at a minimum of 10°C (50°F) to avoid scars; it resents high humidity; Oreocereus hendriksenianus; Oreocereus doelzianus syn. Morawetzia d.; Oreocereus trollii; Oreocereus variicolor.
